View Full Version : The ski lift you dread getting on
Michael 09-01-06, 09:36 PM What is the ski lift that you just hate getting on?
Personally, I don't mind chair lifts, they can get a bit annoying if they have to go over a mountain peak and a blizzard sets in. Even worse are the T-Bar lifts, they can be tiring at times especially long ones.
My favourite ski lift is obviously the cable car, nicely sheltered to keep out the snow and wind...
What ski lift do you like / hate the most?
makemedie 09-01-06, 09:41 PM Ski lifts are fun! The view from up there is amazing! Its so calming sitting in one of those.
If you're scared of em...think of it this way...what would you rather? Walk up all the way or catch a 5 minute ski lift? :D
Michael 09-01-06, 09:53 PM It's not that im scared of them, there are just some such as the T-Bar that get tiring after a while.
I'm with Michael for the T-Bar. It can get tiring pretty quickly, especially if it's a steep slope you're going back up. I also just started snowboarding, and let me tell you the T-Bar lift is almost impossible to master the first few days... :(
Superteddy 11-01-06, 05:03 PM Hehe i remember when i was learning to use the T hook with a snowboard. I think i spent most off the time that day trying to get to the top. A couple off times i almost did it and was thinking yes, im getting there.. 2-3 sec later i would fall off and i was so mad that i just hang on to the T hook untill i got up.. My friends where all pointing and laughing at me.. Not that fun then but i laugh at it now.
gotshoes 11-01-06, 05:20 PM ^ hehe, thats a classic Superteddy :)
I had some bumps with the T-hook aswell in the beginning...
Now I just have fun riding them, its cool to hang after them with your hands and do nosepress/talepress etc :)
The skilifts where I usually ride ( Hafjell ) isent that cool really. Maybe its beacouse Ive done them so many times...
I enjoyed the lifts in Hemsedal thoo, they where new. Had a lovely view on the top there I remember..
TormentedJewelry 13-01-06, 12:37 AM I love ski lifts :D Ironic really since I'm afraid of heights. I try not to look down but straight in front of me. Plus, holding on to the person next to me usually helps.
dazisonfire 13-01-06, 06:12 PM I was scared to go on one when I was younger, haha. I'd get on one now but I'd still be pretty nervous up so high in the air, and if you fall you're dead. :(
Gotta hate the chair-lifts that end in an abnormally steep slope, getting off one of those with a snowboard is pretty horrible.
Also the T-bars, when I was starting out snowboarding they were the things nightmares were made of (and still are...)
Heh I like T Bars. I dont prefer any ski lift. A ski lift is a ski lift. It takes me where I want to go..
I fell off a ski lift when I was younger though, luckily I had no broken bones..
speedfreak 16-04-06, 10:14 PM The cable car is so much fun, except for when there are like 100 people all cramed into one. lol
zlathim 18-09-06, 07:31 PM I like the high speed quad lifts. The chairs derail and slow way down for get on and get off, but when the chair reattaches it takes off like a souped up Camero!
The best ski lift I was ever on was a 6man chairlift. This lift had a pull down bubble for bad weather and big leather padded seats! Whats more is once you sat down on the padding it turned on the heated seats!!! I could have sat on it all day long!
Great for snowboarding considering you spend alot of time on your ass!

I've seen ones like that before but never with the heated seats! Sounds pretty fancy, what resort was this at?
Ehh one of the lifts at Zell am See, Austria. Fairly new lift at the top of a two car gondela.
I am a little more edgy getting off chairlifts after a fall a few years back. Luckily the net caught me!
Line101 03-01-08, 03:47 AM what is a t-bar? that chair lift with the bubble thing sounds like a very nice change!
NullQwerty 04-01-08, 03:37 PM Growing up, I used to ski at a small place near my house in the Catskill Mountains called Holiday Mountain. They had a tow rope, which if you don't know is basically a rope that sits on the floor and you grab on to and it pulls you up. You'd only be able to get it 2 and 1/2 feet off the ground, so it would totally kill your back (even as a kid).
But then they also had the best lift I've been on. It was called the Palma lift I believe. It was a pole with a small 12" disc on the bottom (and kind of had a spring on the top). You'd put the disc between your legs and when the guy in charge would activate it, it would take off and shoot you up the hill pretty fast. It was fun, safe, easy, and fast.
These were small hills though.

Im guessing from the description, that this is what we call a tbar/drag/button lift.
As zlathim said, I think the best lifts are the ones that derail themselves before they hit your legs.;)
Went to Lech,Austria for a day this year and most of their lifts were two man that catch you by surprize as they come flying up behind you!
hi speed 6 person is the best ive used. old ones that run quickly yet dont slow down in the gate, so that when you get on it hits the back of your knees, and when you get off too slowly it hits your head
Powderdog 19-01-08, 01:27 AM Roca Jack at Portillo, Chile. It's not getting on that's the problem; it's getting off. You're hanging almost vetically with the slope behind you.
mortabunt 23-09-08, 10:32 PM T-bars, they are tollerable until you have to hang when it gets to 50+ degrees, and I never learned how to use them.
