Can someone tell me what the terms "free skiing", "big mountain" sking and "off piste" mean?

All i know 'off piste' is when you take a track down a section of the mountain which has not been groomed, generally alot more dangerous.

Firstly, welcome to Talk Ski and thanks for posting! The other 2 terms that adam mentioned may mean different things, can you possibly put them in context? This will give us a better understanding as to their meaning.

Well in that case "big mountain" and "free skiing" must mean they are ideal for off piste? Maybe "free skiing" is another term for off piste?

Free Skiing which i presume is the same as Freestyle Skiing:

This is a Skiing Discipline which incorporates techniques in Skiing and acrobatics.

When i am selling a ski i refer to "big Mountain" skis as a ski geared more twords the off-piste, powder, trees than trails and groomers. however they are not considered full powder skis. Big Mountain skis can still be skied on groomers and icier days without turning your legs to jelly. A good example of a big mountain ski is the Head Mojo 90. Also, when i say free skiing i mean the same as Big Mountain, free style refers to the park and pipe.

have you ever seen the free skiing comps? it is basically off piste with alot of cliffs and steep shutes.

Doesn't Piste just refer to a trail, so off-piste is anything out of bounds or not a normal trail?

I usually think of off-piste as powder/backcountry/trees, freestyle as park/pipe/tricks (or maybe also backcountry), and big mountain as bowls, powder, and backcountry...

Basically, I would interpret that as a ski made for any of the things listed above is not a ski that is primarily made for groomers, racing, or major carving.
