Not an experienced skier but I had a great time in the Italian Alps at New Year. I don't find skiing that relaxing - quite exhausting in fact - but maybe that's because I'm not very good. :)

Skiing can be relaxing depending on how you ski. If you bomb down every piste in sight I'd imagine that it could get exhausting!

Also, as you said, if your technique is not very good you can actually be using more energy than you need to be using.

Yeah, I certainly wasn't bombing it down. But, because I'm not very good, I'm concentrating all the time and am just not relaxed. I think that's why I got so tired. A half day was enough for me!
