But it always seems to be more hastle.. TomC 31-08-05, 12:38 AM I am considering buying my first pair of skis! Do you have any suggestions? What about yourself, do you rent/hire or own a pair? NumBa1Stunna516 02-09-05, 02:26 AM I am thinking about buying a pair aswell. It would be great if an expert can reccomend some. Michael 02-09-05, 08:19 AM Chris, You could try looking in the ski directory http://www.beforeyouski.com/ under "Skis", there are some useful sites there and if you find any more why not add them! Michael NumBa1Stunna516 02-09-05, 10:18 AM That site has some great links! Thanks. utbeastie 03-09-05, 02:30 AM I rent my skis now, but i am looking to buy some soon. Hot Sauce 25-09-05, 06:31 PM I dont need to buy any i rent them all wherever i go. Opie 08-01-06, 11:27 PM I usually rent - I find it to be a lot more practical, although it probably works out to be more expensive in the long run. Still well worth it in my opinion. :) blank260 08-01-06, 11:31 PM I used to have my own pair of skies but when I went up to Colorado during one Winter break, I did a really bad landing and land on my right ski wrong and cracked the tip of it. So I just rent them from now on since I only go up there once a year which is during the winter. makemedie 09-01-06, 10:15 AM Rental's the best way to go. Get rental insurance, and rent em out, best thing to do. They're tried and tested too, what more could you want? :D Superteddy 12-01-06, 05:20 PM I rent when I'm skiing but i do have some old skies in the garage. When i go snowbording i use my trusty Burton Jonnerz 12-01-06, 05:22 PM I rent, as I don't ski very often. zlathim 19-09-06, 05:09 PM Up until this year I rented. It was easy and relatively convenient to just pick them up before skiing and drop them off after. No maintenance to deal with and no need to have a ski rack or anything on the car as I rented them right on the mountain as opposed to renting them in town and toting them up the hill. This year I bought my own skis because I am planning on skiing more often and it just made good sense financially. Of course now I have to learn about maintenance and all that stuff, but that is why I am on this forum! snoskichk121 01-11-07, 01:31 PM I have Rossignol skis with Salomon bindings. I got them plus my Salomon boots at a flea market for 20 bucks canadianskier 01-11-07, 10:06 PM I have had quite a few since I started skiing, but I ski rossignol and salomon right now. This season I plan on buying new again and the rossi 9S is top of my list so far. Have to test them first. Nordica and Elan are making great skis this season too. Zlathim- Here is a link to KUU's website and tuning information. I find that this info is pretty good and not to hard to do. http://www.kuu.com/how2tune.htm snoskichk121 06-11-07, 08:17 PM I got a pair of Rossignol skis with Salomon bindings and Salomon boots for only $20 at a flea market. I can't wait to try them out snoskichk121 06-11-07, 08:18 PM whoops, sorry, i posted my above reply twice, lol! :) Line101 18-12-07, 03:13 AM i have line chronic skiis danger 18-12-07, 03:40 AM definitely buy. what you get depends on what you ski SkiCatDad 18-12-07, 04:26 PM The best thing about owning is that you don't have to wait in line at the resort or goto your local ski shop to get or return skis. At first I got advice from my local ski-shop. They'll usually give you an honest recommendation based on what kind of skiing you do. I honestly prefer straight skis that are slightly larger for my height. Longer skis won't chatter as much at higher speeds. Once you know what to look for, another great source is a local ski-swap/sale. I got a pair for $1000 skis for a little over a hundred bucks. They were used only a few times and performed great. The savings are incredible at some of these events. I remember once when I got a brand new pair of skis, on my first day using them I barely crossed my tips and there was a huge scratch on the top. Check your local ski shop for ski swap dates. wbsr 20-12-07, 01:37 AM 185cm Salomon Screams 179cm K2 Public enemy 181cm Prior originals SkiCatDad 20-12-07, 03:58 AM 210 Atomics for flying down the mountain and cranking out big turns (dont bring in bumps) 190 Rossies for having fun (jumps and bumps) Skallen 06-09-11, 06:26 PM I bought the volkl alleys last year. If anyone could suggest a place from where I can buy a pair of the best skis then that would be great! Money is not a constraint but at the same time, kindly suggest something that is not monstrously expensive! Andy B. 11-11-11, 11:12 AM I like to have my own Stuff !!! ( But it is more important to have your own boots ( read [B]BOOTS[B]). That is where people seem to really come unstuck. However skis I have owed in recent times are; Rossi Axium (easy learning ski & very forgiving) Dynastars Contact 10, 165 cm a great ski, tracks well on ice / hard pack not so hot in deep powder, but great 90 % time - I love em ! My latest addition a pair of K2 Extremes, Why ? cause I wanted a pair of twin tips, & something that will handle Nth-American powder + perform well here at home in Oz. whilst being twin tips they are more of an all rounder - than a terrian park shooter. And they look great too ! { picked them up in Vancouver , just before I came home - saved a bundle } skibearll 21-11-11, 12:55 AM I was skiing K2 Burnin' Luvs/Phat Luvs but when it was time (last year) for an all mountain ski, I just couldn't feel the (Lotta) Luv with K2's, so out with brand loyalty and into a pair of Salomon Geishas. I have Salomon boots as well, about five years old. Until 2008 we only skied about 20 days a year, but now it's closer to 80+. (With 2009/10 off for a cervical fusion, so two years of 80 days.) I am 5'7", female, and over 60 . . . okay, okay, over 65, but not much . . . I am skiing on 153's. I have a fairly significant right side flexibility and strength problem (To quote our local PT, "I have never seen a hip that tight!") I like making quick turns, do not like speed, and ski almost solely trees and blacks at Big Sky. I'm told my biggest shortcoming is "between my ears". I just call it having too vivid an imagination! Am I an absolute fool to be skiing something this short? kali3 21-11-11, 09:26 PM K2 Apache recons and Rossi S-7s Andy B. 22-11-11, 10:20 AM GOOD STUFF !!! and don't be ashamed of age, it's a badge of Honour! My old man hung up the poles at ........... 80, & his best mate 81, they had been skiing together for over 50 yrs. That's something to be truly proud of! Cheers The Ice - Cutter erapo 09-12-11, 02:31 PM Cool! mark44 20-12-11, 07:22 PM I rent my skis now, but i am looking to buy some soon. And then give them on rent both :D skiier1 29-12-11, 06:12 PM I have K2 Apaches and love them. mark44 30-12-11, 09:00 PM I want to start but need help, any best purchasing place? skiier1 30-12-11, 09:27 PM I wouldn't buy skis based upon what other people like. Your best bet is to go to your local ski shop or resort and demo a few pairs, then decide what's best for you. Spikeski 01-01-12, 10:38 AM Volkl Mantra, supurb skis tokyoCO 12-01-12, 01:17 AM 2010 Salomon Shogun 191, they work great in all conditions! nathans213 24-01-12, 04:28 AM Every condition, resort or no resort! dawnRwright 01-02-12, 06:11 AM what i can say.. is that it is nice for you to have your own or buy your own so that you can have a comfortable feeling when skiing.. but if you don't ski that much and you don't like to keep you ski stuff to used for your next ski vacation, better go for rent... ^^ lilywhite 01-02-12, 03:42 PM Skibearll I'm just under 6 ft and ski a 156 because my joints just won't allow me cope with the weight of anything longer. I don't think your mad at all. If your having fun and enjoying yourself does it really matter what some weight/height/ability chart says is your optimal ski length? |
