View Full Version : Buying Skis?
Is there much point in buying skis if you live far away from a resort (different country). I think that as soon as you buy a pair of skis another better pair will be out.
So is it better to rent or buy?
Michael 01-12-04, 11:17 PM Tom,
I agree with you on this one. I don't think I will ever buy a pair of skis for the reasons you mentioned and the pure hastle getting them on planes etc ....
Starski 16-06-05, 10:36 PM Depends how often you ski more than how far away you live. If you ski a couple of weeks a year then owning skis is not a good idea. Much better to rent up-to-date for a fraction of the price and have maintenance taken care of for you.
Plus it means you can test many different skis - with the variation in todays market, this can only be a good thing.
Michael 19-06-05, 01:45 AM Yea, that would be my biggest worry. It would certainly take some testing before you were to get the right ski.
I think I am going to buy a pair of skis for this season! Now it's just the problem of finding the right pair! Any suggestions?
utbeastie 01-09-05, 05:32 AM I would say buy your own skis. Yes, it is a hastle to bring them on the plane, but i feel like my skis are the "perfect fit"
NumBa1Stunna516 02-09-05, 02:47 AM I agree with utbeastie, I personally would like my own just for the pure fact that I know it will be the perfect one (I dont know if I said that right).
PlateauSkier 23-10-05, 07:25 PM Own skis definately! Planes can be a hassle but most airlines are becoming more skier friendly these days and do not charge extra. For the sake of walking (wheeling?) over to oversized baggage, it is well worth it.
As far as which ski to buy, well how long is a piece of string? ;) What type of skiing do you do you enjoy?
TormentedJewelry 13-01-06, 12:34 AM Buy. It's always better to have your own. The others pretty much said it all for me so go with their advice and b-u-y it ^.~
I reckon it's better to rent. It probably workd out as being more expensive, it seems to me to be a lot more practical...
dazisonfire 13-01-06, 11:12 PM I agree that it's better to rent. You can tryout a ski, and if you don't like it just return it after you're finished. There's no point in buying a ski then deciding you don't like it after you've made the purchase.
Yep...
I always rent. I dont care much for buying skiis because I dont go skiing THAT much you know? Id rather rent skiis, and buy my own boots so theyre fit to me, and I know Ill be ok on the slopes.
Dizaster 17-04-06, 06:31 AM Yeah if you live somewhere where its hot alot, or seasonal like winter once a year and only a few months, its probably not worth it, but if you're somewhere where its colder most of the year, its definately worth it.
Renting for me, I wouldn't want to spend alot of money on skiis I'd end up rarely using, just me though.
I always rent ski's - I have yet to buy a pair :D
If you only ski a few times a year then I would definately rent.
If skiing is something you are going to be doing every week then Id suggest investing in your own pair :)
ebittner 14-05-06, 07:52 AM I think if you do not have a ski resort in your contry you should rent becasue if you buy you have to transport them every time which would not be to often.
darren87 18-07-06, 12:40 PM buy ski's, if you know how to ski well you will have your own style of skiing anda ski to match it. and ski's arent changing much with in some cases 1mm a season which is nothiing.
goatchee5138 03-09-06, 08:00 AM From a sellers viewpoint, and a former coach, skiis are not the most important purchase. boots are the first thing to buy, you can ski anything and have fun, if your feet hurt though forget about it. Get a good pair of boots!!! than worry about the skis.
