Online Weather Tools!

In the Northwest (Washington, Oregon and BC) the weather is pretty capricious. All winter long large storms blow in off of the Pacific Ocean. These storms can either bring lots of new snow OR rain. Nothing sucks like going up to the mountain expecting fresh snow and finding a rainstorm.

Sadly, the "weather conditions" page on websites for local ski areas are often somewhat less than honest. To add to the confusion it can be raining when the temperature is as low as 28, and it can be snowing when the temperature is as high as 35.

Here are some good online tools for finding out the REAL weather conditions in Washington.

The NOAA site has pretty good weather forecasts and current conditions: http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/sew/

The state of Washington has fairly good forecasts and cameras showing weather conditions at the mountain passes: http://www.wsdot.wa.gov/traffic/passes/
(Also useful for finding out if the passes are closed for avalanche control.)

This is an amazing site. You can see raw weather data at ski areas over the past 24 hours. You can use this to see if there's been a thaw followed by a freeze (which usually means ICE) or if there has been rain recently. http://www.nwac.us/mtnweather.htm

Any helpful web sites or hints for other parts of the country?

Thanks for sharing, anyone going to Europe could use www.bbc.co.uk/weather - it's a great site and can do 5 day forecasts.

If you are looking for the current conditions for Whistler, check out my blog in my signature. Basically I tell it as I find it. I update almost daily, as I ski almost daily.
Obviously not much going on now, but once the season starts, I will be reporting again.
cheers
