Marge's ski injury story

On March 13th 2007 I was skiing with my granddaughter on a blue run and caught an edge, got twurled around then went down. My skis never came off even though I could feel my left leg twisting severely. Another skier passing by asked if I was hurt. I was in so much pain and my left leg was twisted to the left. I asked (begged) him to release the binding and get the ski off my foot and then notify to ski patrol which he did. The ski patrol took me to the ski patrol injury area where a nurse examined my left lower extremity/ankle but because there was no MD available no xray was taken. Instead, she wrapped it in ice, gave me a pair of crutches and drove me to my car in the ski area parking lot and instructed me to go to the nearest ER (approx 25 miles away) When I arrived at the ER I sent my granddaughter in to ask them if they could come out with a wheelchair because I was afraid to try to use the crutches. They where wonderful to both me and my granddaughter, they even bought her lunch. (she's 9yo) They xrayed my injuried leg/ankle and discovered I had three fractures, the fibula, tibular and one of the ankle bones. I had no one available to come to the ski area (approx 250 miles) so the gave me a quick lesson on using crutches and (against there advice) I was on my way. They did make arrangments for me to see an orthopedic surg when got home, which I did. surgery was performed, with a medial and lateral incision to repair fx w/ plates and screws. It's been a long, hard recovery partly because of complications which developed 5months after surgery.I developed a bone infection and had to go back to the hosp to have one of the plates removed and a PIC line put in to go home on IV antibiotics but my health insurance wouldn't cover it so I had to go in to a Nursing Home/jRehab facility for six weeks.
I'm finally getting back to normal but I don't think my leg/ankle will ever be back to normal, it's still numb and very stiff. I swore I would never ski again but as I'm improving I'm starting to get the bug! I will be taking my granddaughter up north in a couple of weeks so its up in the air if I will attempt to ski.jI don't dare mention any of this to my family because they think there is absolutely no question that my skiing days are over! Anyway, thank you for letting me vent, The next time I write I hope to tell you all that I have started skiing again! Talk to you soon, Marge37
PS: By the way, I'm 70yo and my goal is to ski at least until I'm 80!

Glad to hear you're making a good recovery, so have you got your tripped booked?

As a matter of fact, I did get on ski's this past March when I took my grandchildren to Loon Mnt in NH. I skied two runs on the lower part of the Mnt but because of the plate in my lower leg it was very uncomfortable and I had to stop! Now I'mscheduled to have the plate and screws surgically removed next week and if all goes well I should be good to go by ski season!
Wish me luck!!! Marge37

Wow that's wonderful news - did you manage to enjoy your March ski or was it just too painful?

It was so wonderful to glide down the slope and it wasn't painful but walking in the boot to the lift was hell! I hope after I have the plate and screws removed I won't have that problem!
