Newly sharpened skis
Hey
I usually fly down any straight groomed run with no problem. However, I decided to get my skis waxed because they were sometimes sticking on certain surfaces and I couldn't skate as fast as usual (ie. wax is gone). Then, waxing and sharpening come together. I always forget what happens until I go on the skis the first time after the sharpen. The skis dig down hard into the groomed runs like a hot knife with butter - logically. However, this makes carving much harder than usual. I was carving so hard down a hill snow was flying everywhere but I wasn't slowing down. I'd like to blame this on the sharpened skis, but is it my technique? After 3 or 4 runs the middle edges of my skis were significantly duller than the edge of my tips..and by that point I was fine again..What's going on? |

All ski edges and snowboard edges need to be D-tuned slightly in the tips and tails. Mostly you can do this with a gummy stone or if you really good at it, you can use a hard sharpening stone. A Scotch-Brite pad also works if you run it down the edges to take the burrs off freshly sharpened edges.

As for your technique it’s hard to tell without seeing you ski, but it sounds like you are not carving, but you are skidding off the center of your skis. That’s what happens when the center of the skis are dulled and leaving the tips and tail sharp. One way to tell if you’re carving it by looking at your tracks that you leave in the snow if it’s freshly groomed, you can see the track of your ski and it should be about a quarter of the width of your ski left into the snow with nothing but a line drawn into the snow from edge to edge if your tracks are any wider than that, it could be skidding.

Hey Chowzerski, I posted that back in 2010. I even forgot this account and forum existed until I got an e-mail notification. I always wondered and never got an answer so thanks! What is D-tuning? After a sharpen and wax, am I taking a scotch brite pad and dulling the edges at the front and back tips and tails?

I just found this place. I didn’t know about it before. I didn’t realize that most of the posts were from years ago. In fact after I messaged you I saw when you posted.
