17 months! My mom got me and my brother plastic skis, and we chased each other around the house on the carpet before ever skiing on snow. This meant we learned how to fall, get back up, shuffle, and not step on our own skis. So I basically learned to ski at the same time I learned to walk. That said, this method only works if your parents have a lot of dedication, patience, and skill. Generally, kids won't get much out of skiing or get very far until they have enough muscle control to turn their toes together and make a wedge/pizza/snowplow.

How about 8 or 9?
Starting children at a really early age is OK for some children; not OK for others. Most important is their muscle development. At age 2 1/2- How much balance and coordination you think your child has? If they show it, introduce them but be careful. Their bones and muscles are still developing and you don't want to stretch it too far. My 3 year old showed above average development at 3 1/2 so we started him very slowly and carefully. Once he could slide down the hill without my assistance, he sort of was no longer under my control; had a mind of his own; so I put him in kiddie school. From that point on, he spent more than half his ski (and later snowboard) days in either ski school or a race training program.
I have 2 nephews who started at 8 and 9. 2 hours after their first lesson, they were coaching me and my brother -in-law on how to get on and off the lift. After their second lesson, they were skiing down blue square runs and wanted nothing to do with me or their dad. |

I started at 9, but my best friend started at 4. I think if the kid is open to it, then it isn't too early.
