Help! Pocket Rocket skis

Pretty stupid name, I know, but they are supposed to be good. I havent been able to go skiing with them yet, but I got them waxed and stuff, and I was wondering, how smooth should it be on flat ground? I took them in my back yard to try them and get the feel of them. We have a bit more than a half foot of snow. I tried going down (our yard goes downhill a little) and they sank into the snow. they kept stopping and when I pushed foreward with my poles they went not a foot before stopping. They got all icy and I was wondering if thats normal. It didnt feel right . Please reply, I dont want to be embarrased and die on the ski hill if my skis dont work right!
