End of season when shops switch winter stock for the summer stuff. Closing down sales. The month before the season starts, again shops getting rid of old stock. Sign up for as many catalogues/newsletters from manufacturers as you can, you'll get emails about flash sales. I got decent skis with poles thrown in on groupon.

Buy prior year versions of skis. Backcountry.com and other online retailers will generally have overstock at good prices, however, they do not always have the most popular models and most common sizes available so choose wisely.
