Starting cross country skiing

Hi.

I want to have a go at this, given the recent snow, but have very little idea about it all. I have a pair of boots about 14 yrs old that have a metal bar in the toe and am told they don't make these any more. I acquired a pair of rather worn skis but they have the wrong bindings - 3 pins - and was told they are not worth getting bindings for, even if I could get some. So what do I need? When I look at skis on ebay, they mention names of bindings but I haven't a clue what they are!
I would be grateful for some help from you experienced skiers, please. I don't want to do mega expeditions, just pottering about on the local fields and fells and I think I'd prefer not to do the skating technique.
Thanks!
