What's the smartest approach for the right stuff at a good price?

I started skiing 3 years ago and I am intermediate (mostly on groomed trails), and maybe this or next season, I will be comfortable on blacks.

I still have my initial gear which is from atomic. Should I:
A. rent on the hill (and buy there, especially if you get rental credit, or buy online)?
B. buy everything locally (or maybe just the boots)?
C. buy some or all stuff online?
And when? It's probably best to wait til the end of the season ...?
