Family trip in Feb - beginner + non-skiers

Planning a 6-night family trip in early Feb. We have one 14-yr old beginner, a senior intermediate and 2 non-skiers. We're looking for someplace with good slopes & lessons for the beginner, moderate shopping area for the non-skiers, where we don't have to drive and that's not too expensive.

First, we'd appreciate recommendations on where to go. Are looking into Copper Mtn, Steamboat and Crested Butte currently.

Also, what's the best way to put a package together? We put together a pkg on the Steamboat site pretty easily that was cheaper than anything we've seen from an agent. Unfortunately, most of the other resort sites we've looked at weren't nearly as easy to use as the Steamboat site. Should we talk to some more agents, are there other online sources that are easy to navigate?

thanks!

I would call central reservation (the 1-800 nr that is listed where you do your online shopiing). They can give you the same prices and give you advice re. lodging, savings (e.g. if there is a free youth lift ticket with purchase of an adult) ... a service you should use as you might leave several thousand bucks there.

Steamboat is nice (great mountain and school), although the actual town is a 10 min shuttle ride from the gondola base. I haven't been to the other resorts you consider. You might also think about Breckenridge - a nice downtown close to the various bases and a very well run ski school. Only disadvantage that there are large crowds during the weekends, worse than (what I have heard about) Copper.

Summit County Resorts

Keystone is one of the most family friendly resorts in the country. They have terrain for everyone, as well as some of the best instructors anywhere. Keystone has free shuttle service to anywhere in the resort, as well as free bus service to anywhere in the county on the Summiit Stage. We have stayed in a beautiful 3 bedroom condo slopeside in the Key Condo Condominiums. They have an indoor pool, outdoor hot tub, and sauna. The rates are really reasonable.
