Lake Tahoe resorts.
I have the Epic pass for the 1st time and this includes heavenly and northstar. I know most of the Co resorts (and the Epic pass includes Breck, Keystone, Vail, Araphoe) and wanted to see whether heavenly is worthwhile the longer trip -my family would come from the Chicago area, which means flying 2 hrs to Denver and about 5 hrs to Reno - is it worth it? Always fun to try sthg new. I also know that the snow has been worse than in Co last year, is that a rule or is it an exception?

I don't think Colorado will have a mess up winter this year. Vail and Utah are pretty good to me. Check out some ski resorts and send a query.

For me personally, I'm biased. With your epic pass, you get Heavenly, Northstar, and Kirkwood (which has some of the best snow and challenging terrain in the west). Heavenly has just shear space to ski and the tree skiing in my opinion is second to none. Northstar is a great beginner to intermediate mountain with a village that rivals Colorado and Europe. Colorado has incredible snow though.
