Skiing Alps in April - advice?

I'm considering going snowboarding the Alps during mid/late April.. most people say it is too late, and i should probably head for the high altitudes.. Cervinia or Zermatt. Now i'm not sure if Im going to waste my time as the snow will probably be really icy? Does anybody have some experience or advice on this?

For the possibility of fresh light snow, the higher altitudes of Colorado (especially Summit County) and Utah (especially the LCC and BCC areas) make the most sense to me. I've had great April skiing at both.
